About SonicMatter
At SonicMatter we combine our love of music and music education (Sonic = sound) and science (especially chemistry or the study of Matter). My name is Russell M., and I am a high school student in Northern California. I play the drums for our award-winning high school jazz band.
When I started playing the drum set, I was amazed by the crisp and varied sounds of the drums, especially the cymbals. But it did not take long to realize that a short session left my ears ringing. Since then, I have used many different forms of hearing protection for musicians for both practice and performances. Each option has positive and negative features, and I continue to search for the ideal solution.
Part of our mission at SonicMatter is to raise awareness of the risk of hearing loss in musicians and their audiences. Our community service projects focus on these efforts.
